Lost luggage – it’s been the plight of many a traveler. Yes, we all know that traveling with carry-on only greatly reduces the risk of an airline losing your bag. And yes, we also know that if we must check a bag, it behooves us to pop an Apple AirTag or other similar tracking device inside to help us track those bags we so fear going astray.

United Airlines aircraft.Turns out, us commonfolk aren’t the only ones at the mercy of the airline’s baggage handling capabilities. On Friday night, tennis star Naomi Osaka posted the following on X:

lol @united lost my bags and if I don’t get them tonight or tomorrow I literally can’t play Cinncinati [sic] 😂 😂 😂

Presumably, since Osaka posted that she ‘literally can’t play’ unless her bags were found, some or all of her tennis gear was lost.

United Airlines was quick to respond, saying: Hi, Naomi. We’re sorry to hear this. We’d like to look into this and assist further. When you have a moment, please DM your bag tag number. ^NB

Almost three hours after Osaka’s original post, United followed up, posting: Hi, Naomi. We wanted to let you know we can confirm your bags have arrived in Cincinnati. Please send us a DM so we can finalize the plan to reunite you with your baggage. ^NB

Thankfully, this unexpected adventure had a happy ending for Osaka. But lost luggage is a stressful headache, whether you’re a tennis star or not, which is why this serves as a reminder to avoid checking your luggage whenever possible and to use AirTags if you can’t.

Osaka is headed to Cincinnati to compete in the Cincinnati Open, and according to AOL, “the 26-year-old Osaka is coming off competing in the Canadian Open where she was eliminated by Elise Mertens in the round of 32 Thursday. She also just returned from maternity leave earlier this year after announcing her pregnancy just days before Australian Open in January 2023.”

Osaka played at the Cincinnati Open last in 2022. She was eliminated in the first round, losing to Zhang Shuai from China in straight sets.

The Cincinnati Open runs from August 11 to August 19 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.
