The term road rage was first said to be coined back in 1988 and media usage of the alliterative phrase continued to grow slowly but steadily from there. And I don’t know about you but in recent years, I think it’s been getting worse.

Man karate chops mirror off of car.
Growing up, the worst I saw was maybe my dad rolling down his window and honking and yelling at drivers who cut him off. About seven years ago, I flicked my headlights at a car that went flying by me on a residential road, going more than double the speed limit. Unfortunately for me, the crazed driver was stopped at a red light a few blocks down the road and he was seriously flipping out.

If a car hadn’t pulled in between us and had the light not turned green, I really don’t know what would have happened, since it seems like these days, everyone has a weapon on them.

If that wasn’t enough to make me realize it’s just not worth responding to irresponsible and dangerous drivers, a short time later, I sat next to an Australian guy on a plane who was living in Mexico. I told him about the incident and he said, in parts of Mexico, if you flick your lights at the wrong person, they will ‘you know what.’ He said that some of these guys place no value on human life.

So these days, I try to mind my own business and just brush off if someone cuts me off, makes an illegal turn or tosses garbage out of the window. It’s sometimes difficult but now that I have kids, it’s definitely not worth it and incidents like the video embedded below are a good reminder why:

A video has gone viral thanks to an observant passerby who filmed a man in a Corvette who was ticked off about something a female driver did to begin with and when he got out of the car, it looks like she threw a plastic bottle at him. That set him off and he ran, jumped up in the air and karate chopped her driver’s side mirror off.

It was quite impressive actually but it must have hurt but he hightailed it out of there. According to the Miami New Times, the incident happened at the intersection of Biscayne Boulevard and NE Ninth Street in downtown Miami.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like the driver was ticketed or arrested or that the Miami Police Department (MPD) wants any involvement.

The New Times reports the MPS said an initial search of its database did not turn up records of a police response to the incident.” They also thanked them for bringing this video to their attention. But the MPD spokesperson said, “We would like to take advantage of this opportunity to educate our community on the importance of remaining calm and composed when faced with situations depicted in the footage, and avoid taking any independent action. Instead immediately contact police.”
