If you’re watching or reading the news, then you already know about the global IT outage, being called the “largest IT outage in history.” So far, there are over 3,000 flights canceled today. Here’s what to do if you’re traveling today.

Global IT outage leads to chaos at airports across the country. My family and I got lucky because we were supposed to be on an American Airlines (AA) flight from Chicago to Los Angeles today, after being away from home for a month. However, our trip got cancelled so instead, we flew back to L.A. from Toronto on Wednesday (via Chicago). Our flight was just delayed 45 minutes, which is minuscule compared to what travelers are dealing with today.

The ORD-LAX flight we were originally booked on was canceled, which meant we would have been stuck for days. We probably would have had to split up in middle seats since there are no seats available as this is peak travel season. Twelve days ago, the TSA just broke their all-time record for the number of passengers passing through security checkpoints in the United States.

Here’s some video taken by travelers at airports around the country and posted to social media:

Timelapse of American Airlines, Delta, and United plane traffic
One of the videos that really shows the impact is this FlightRadar24  “12-hour timelapse of American Airlines, Delta, and United plane traffic after what was likely the biggest IT outage in history forced a nationwide ground stop of the three airlines.”

This is crazy, no doubt, but one person put it all in perspective with their comment, which said: “Could be worse, my son & wife are in the hospital since last night in active labor and with no computers/operating rooms that are functional!”
