One of my friends sent me the video below without any kind of warning. I had no idea what it was and figured it was going to be something cool or funny since the opening scene is on a beautiful looking body of water. But then, a few seconds in, BAM. Something I never saw coming.

It was like a scene straight out of a movie. I thought the video was being filmed in Thailand but it turns out it was Furnas Lake in Brazil. According to ABC News: “A towering slab of rock broke from a cliff and toppled onto pleasure boaters drifting near a waterfall on a Brazilian lake Saturday and officials said at least six people died. Edgard Estevo, commander of the Minas Gerais State Fire Department, said at a news conference that in addition to the dead as many as 20 people might be missing and officials were seeking to identify them.”

The video, which you can watch below, was posted to TikTok and is obviously anything but funny. It’s quite shocking so please be warned. But I also think it’s an important safety reminder. With all the crazy weather events happening around the world, it’s important to keep your distance from cliffs, regardless of whether you’re in the water or not. I myself made a mental note of this after three beachgoers were killed when a bluff in Encinitas, California fell on them in 2019. This is a deeply devastating story. My condolences to everyone impacted by this tragedy. Stay safe, everybody.
