We’ve seen a lot of baggage handlers caught on video recently mishandling luggage. Here are two recent examples:
–American Airlines baggage handler busted for ‘bowling with bags
–Viral video of a baggage handler violently slamming luggage down will make you a better traveler – Here’s how
I’m not sure why people don’t realize that in this digital age, there’s a good chance someone is watching and recording your every action. And I’m not sure why baggage handlers don’t treat customers’ bags as they would their own. The video that’s making the rounds today shows a Cathay Pacific Airways representative repeatedly tossing gate checked suitcases down a flight of stairs. Watch the embedded video below:

According to A Fly Guy Travels, “The company has started an investigation and has taken the employee off her current duties while they look into it. On July 16, 2024, the airline apologized to passengers for any inconvenience this caused.”
When I first watched the video, I was upset and taken aback at how nonchalant she was, just tossing the bags down the plane stairs. Others felt the same way:
@Bahadaman: Absolutely uncalled for…she’s just upset she’s not flying somewhere.
@ester.nemes: Wowwww Shame on her, destroying personal properties because she is hating her job!
@lennox_west: How do say I don’t care about my job
@captainchris: “Inconvenience!” That’s willful damage. I would be more than “inconvenienced” if my £750 Rimowa case was thrown down metal stairs 🤦🏻♂️
But after watching the video a second and third time, I realized that people shouldn’t be upset at the worker, they should be upset with the airline and/or the airport. It seems to me this woman isn’t a baggage handler and most likely a gate agent who had an extraordinary large amount of gate checked bags to deal with.
I’m not sure if she was the one cracking down on the bags or if it’s Cathay’s policy but why isn’t there a baggage slide (like in the video embedded below) like many airports have? You can’t expect a gate agent to walk up and down those stairs with heavy bags and others seem to agree:

@Aflyguytravels: What station is this and why don’t they have slides for the bags? While her actions are not correct, why do they expect one person the carry all those bags down stairs and get an on-time departure. The airline also needs to be questioned.
@pjl1212: I love how the majority shout “fire her”. Try for a minute putting yourself in her shoes. Maybe she has complained multiple times to bosses that having to take multiple heavy bags down stairs is dangerous and impacting her health, maybe she’s not actually meant to do this role, but again bosses ignore her or tell her JFDI and she’s scared they will fire her and she needs the job. Honestly people these days are so quick to judge and want action. God he’ll you in your job, think of all the times you’ve been told to do something and been pissed off having to do it, but had no way to safely complain. People only have compassion when it’s for them ffs 🤦🏼♂️
@air_fareleiro: Give her better working conditions! Making her caring other peoples luggage up and down the stairs is torture. And she has to do this many times a day!!! Horrible!! Just built a ramp or something to download those heavy baggage
I’m not sure which airport this is but Cathay needs to do a better job managing and handling gate checked baggage. This video is also a good reminder that travelers should invest in durable luggage that has a lifetime warranty and not to pack anything fragile unless it can sustain this type of impact.
